Is the Thar a good self drive choice?

The Mahindra Thar is the obvious choice when the drive itself is the point. With a rugged diesel engine and unmistakable road presence, it turns weekend getaways and hill routes into an experience.

It is a 5-seater suv with manual transmission and a diesel engine. Daily rentals include 300 km, which covers a Lonavala return trip (130 km) with room to spare.

It works especially well for adventure trips, hill drives, weekend getaways, photoshoots. If your plans are mostly short city runs, the daily rate matters more than the size; if you are carrying five or more people and luggage, move up to a larger SUV or MUV.

What the Thar costs in Pune

Mahindra Thar self drive rental starts at ₹5,000 per day with 300 km included. Fuel, tolls and parking are not included, and the refundable security deposit is ₹6,000.

Extra kilometres beyond the daily limit are billed at ₹12 per km. If you return late, the extra-hour charge is ₹500. Weekly and monthly bookings are cheaper per day and are quoted with their own kilometre allowance.

For a two-day booking, the included distance is 600 km. That is enough for Lonavala and back on one day, plus a second day of local driving, without touching the extra-km rate.

If you need a car for adventure trips, hill drives, weekend getaways, photoshoots, the Thar is a sensible fit. Book early for weekends and festival dates, when popular models are usually the first to go.

Best road trips from Pune in the Thar

The "days needed" column is the minimum rental length to keep the return trip inside the included kilometres, not a recommendation for how long the trip should take. A Lonavala day trip fits inside one day on this car; Goa does not.

For trips that exceed the daily limit, either book an extra day or budget for extra kilometres at ₹12 per km. Tolls, parking and any interstate permit are separate.

Pickup and doorstep delivery

The Thar can be delivered to your doorstep across Pune, including Wagholi, Kharadi, Viman Nagar and the surrounding neighbourhoods. Pickup from our Wagholi base is also available.

For Wagholi, delivery can be arranged around Wagholi Chowk, Purvarang Society, Bawadi Road. Our home base is in Wagholi, so pickup and doorstep delivery are usually fastest here.

Early-morning departures and late-night airport returns can be arranged with prior notice. Add your flight or train timing in the booking notes.

Before you book the Thar

• You need a valid LMV licence at least one year old, a government photo ID and you must be 21 or older.
• The booking must be in the name of the person who will drive. Another driver cannot collect the car.
• Inspect the car and note the fuel level and odometer reading at handover.
• Return the car with the same fuel level. Fuel, tolls and parking are payable by you.
• The security deposit is refunded after the car is checked in, subject to fastag and traffic violation checks.
